Question:

I have a urostomy and use a night bag, my question is how often should I discard the night bag. Right now I clean daily and use it till it smells. How often should I change it out?

Answer:

Manufacturers Maintenance Recommendation:

Most pouches should be changed every 3 to 4 days to prevent an infection. Always change if it is leaking. The best time to change your pouch is in the morning before you drink any liquids. You will have less urine draining from your stoma at this time. Once you get the routine down, it takes only about 5 minutes at most. It’s recommended that the night bag or leg bag should be replaced every 2-4 weeks or if it looks dirty.

Tips for helping you reduce the potential of a urinary tract infection are:

  • Drink plenty of fluids (at least 6-8 glasses of water each day)
  • Avoid large amounts of caffeine and alcohol, as these can make you drier
  • Use a night drainage leg bag or container and clean it well. Empty your pouch when it is 1/3 to 1/2 full.
  • If you have a history of urinary infections, you may want to ask your doctor if you should take vitamin C or cranberry juice.
